Portland Winterhawks News Release

Hawks Happenings On The Ice:

Last night against Tri-Cities, the Hawks did something that had only occurred one other time in franchise history: won a game on a penalty shot in overtime. Caleb Jones was hauled down on a rush into the offensive zone in the extra frame, then converted his penalty shot to win the game. The only other prior overtime penalty shot winner came from Todd Robinson on February 22, 1999 in Medicine Hat.

Rihards Bukarts had a goal and an assist last night to extend his point streak to 11 games, with at least a point in every game this month. He has 11 goals and nine assists for 20 points in December, including his first two career hat tricks, and 28 points in 20 games overall since being acquired from the Brandon Wheat Kings. With 37 points overall this season he has taken the team lead in scoring.

Alex Schoenborn also had a goal and assist last night to continue his strong play in December. The 20-year-old San Jose Sharks prospect has four goals and 10 assists for 14 points this month, and his 28 points this season in 29 games are already close to the career-high 36 points he had in 72 games in the 2013-14 season.

Hawks Happenings Off The Ice:

Of the Hawks' four games this week, two will be televised live on Portland's CW32. The New Year's Eve game against Seattle and Saturday's game against Spokane will both be shown live, with play-by-play from Todd Vrooman and analysis from Andy Johnson of 1080 The Fan.

Thursday's game is also the annual Toyota New Year's Eve tilt with a post-game skate on the Moda Center ice with the players. Fans can bring their own skates or rent them from the Winterhawks Skating Center's website: www.winterhawksskatingcenter.com. For fans who don't skate there will be bounce houses on the concourse, a countdown to midnight on the big screen and midnight balloon drop, with money contained in some of the balloons.
