Wheats Dump Regina

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings kicked off their post-Christmas schedule Sunday afternoon with a 6-3 victory over the visiting Regina Pats at Westman Communications Group Place.

The Wheat Kings, who jumped out to a 3-1 second period lead, scored three times late in the third to run their home ice win streak to three games.

After the Pats had battled back with back to back goals to start the third and with the game looking like it could be heading to overtime, Brandon captain Macoy Erkamps - on a nifty give and go with Braylon Shmyr - scored a powerplay goal with 71 seconds remaining in regulation time to break the tie and send the Wheat Kings to victory.

"Starts off the faceoff, it was an important faceoff win and always good to start with the puck on the power-play,"Brandon assistant coach David Anning told CKLQ's post game show. "Real good skilled play and Macoy going to the net with his stick on the ice, it's a good play at a critical time."

Tyler Coulter then added an insurance goal seconds later before Jayce Hawryluk, who was playing in his first game since returning from the National Junior Team, scored into an empty net. Duncan Campbell, Ty Lewis and Reid Duke rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who improved to 22-11-1-2.

The win kept Brandon two points up on second place Prince Albert in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division as the Raiders dumped the Saskatoon Blades 6-2.

The Wheat Kings, who play host to the Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday night, debuted two 15-year old prospects on Sunday as Winnipeg's Caiden Daley and Medora's Garrett Sambrook saw regular duty for the team that is missing a number of key players due to injury, the World Junior Hockey Championship in Finland and an unexpected decision from one of its alternate captains.

While Ivan Provorov and John Quenneville are skating for their respective countries in Helsinki, veteran Tanner Kaspick and rookie Stelio Mattheos remain out with injury. To make matters worse, 4-year veteran defenceman Colton Waltz returned from the Christmas break, requested a trade and returned home.

A fixture on Brandon's penalty killing unit, Waltz has two goals and 16 points this season.

Daley, who was Brandon's first round pick in this year's WHL Bantam Draft, currently has eight goals and 18 points in 21 games with the Winnipeg Wild of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League this season while Sambrook - who picked up his first ever WHL assist during the second period Sunday - has one goal and 14 points in 25 games this season with the Southwest Cougars.

Sunday's game featured another PhysioFirst Chuck-a-Puck, in support of the Ashley Neufeld Memorial Softball Complex.

Tickets to Brandon's game against the Warriors on Tuesday are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also call 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
