Portland Winterhawks This Week

Portland Winterhawks News Release

Hawks Happenings On The Ice:

The Winterhawks opened the second half of the season with a 5-4 win in Spokane last night while missing four players to tournaments: Ty Rattie and Tyler Wotherspoon are playing in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, while Nino Niederreiter (Switzerland) and Luke Walker (United States) are playing in the World Junior Championship. Switzerland and the U.S. went head-to-head yesterday with the Americans earning a 3-0 win. The U.S. is 2-0 thus far, while Switzerland is 0-1.

It was announced last week that Winterhawks players Ryan Johansen, Niederreiter and Troy Rutkowski will be playing in the NHL/CHL Top Prospects Game on January 20 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The three players selected to play marks the most of any team in the WHL. The rosters were selected by the 30 NHL General Managers along with NHL Central Scouting.

With the Hawks shorthanded due to the absences of four players, the team has called up Teal Burns to take a spot among the forwards. Burns, 17, was the team's eighth round pick in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft. Burns comes to Portland from the British Columbia Hockey League's Nanaimo Clippers, where he'd posted 13 goals and 22 assists for 35 points in 35 games (including 13 games with the Victoria Grizzlies before being traded). He made his WHL debut last night in Spokane.

In addition to the team's broadcasts on Comcast Channel 15, the Winterhawks will have three games on FSN Northwest this season: Jan. 13 @ Kamloops, Jan. 22 vs. Everett and Feb. 5 vs. Seattle.

Hawks Happenings Off The Ice:

The Winterhawks host Seattle at 8 p.m. New Year's Eve and it promises to be a great family event. There will be a concourse carnival featuring a rock wall and mechanical bull on the Rose Garden concourse. Following the game fans can skate on the ice with Winterhawks players. At the same time, Dean "Scooter" Vrooman and Todd Vrooman will be hosting the first-ever Vrooman & Vrooman show, as they interview players and coaches live at center ice as fans skate around them. It all leads up to the countdown to midnight on the Rose Garden's high-definition videoboard.
