Portland Takes Opener Over Reno, 7-6

RENO, Nev.- Jeff Bailey belted his 12th home run of the season and reached base four times for the Aces, but Reno fell to Portland Monday night in the series opener at Aces Ballpark, 7-6.

Both teams lit up the scoreboard early, as Portland took a 5-4 lead into the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, the Aces benefited from back-to-back bases-load walks, giving Reno a 6-5 advantage.

That lead would not stay for long, though. The Beavers tied the score with a run in the seventh, then took the lead in the eighth when Aces reliever Wes Roemer dealt a wild pitch with a runner on third, chasing home the go-ahead runner. Reno went quietly in the eighth and put the go-ahead run on in the ninth, but the Beavers would turn a game-ending double play to thwart the threat.

Aces starter Bryan Augenstein took a no decision Monday, allowing five runs on nine hits over five innings of work. Augenstein walked two and struck out eight. The loss fell to Roemer (2-6), who surrendered two runs on three hits over three innings of work.

Beavers starter Simon Castro took a no decision in his Triple-A debut, while Greg Burke (2-2) earned the win in relief. Adam Russell closed the door in the ninth for his 14th save of the season.

Bailey finished 1-for-2 with three walks and a pair of RBIs, and Doug Deeds added a double and a triple for the Aces. Brandon Allen reached base three times and drove in his team-leading 85th run.

The series continues on Tuesday at Aces Ballpark. LHP Zach Kroenke (6-3, 3.69 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while RHP Chris Young (0-0, No ERA) makes a Major League rehabilitation start for the Beavers. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT. Tuesday's game marks the return of the ever-popular 50-cent hot dog night at Aces Ballpark.
