OMAHA, NE - Omaha starter Anthony Lerew continued to dominate Pacific Coast League batters Tuesday night at Rosenblatt, pitching the Royals to a 7-0 victory over Round Rock in a game shortened to four-and-a-half innings by rain. A crowd of 3,255 fans watched as Lerew (8-4) allowed just two hits - a bunt single and an infield tapper - walking one and striking out four.
Lerew retired the first six Express batters of the game, before giving up a bunt single to Collin DeLome. After walking the next batter, the 27-year old righty set down nine of the final ten batters he faced. Matt Kata led off the fifth inning with an infield tapper to third.
Lerew came into the contest with a PCL-best 2.72 ERA and trimmed it to 2.60 with Tuesday's performance. In his last five starts, Lerew is 3-1 and has allowed only two earned runs in 35.0 innings for a 0.51 ERA.
The Royals scored their first run in the second inning, when Ed Lucas led off and reached on a fielding error by Round Rock shortstop Edwin Maysonet, the first of three errors in the game committed by the visitors. One night after compiling eleven runs in the third inning of a 23-5 win over Round Rock, the Royals scored four runs in the third inning Monday to take a 5-0 lead.
Mike Moustakas drove in the first run of the third with a single, extending his hitting streak to six games and giving him 21 RBI during the streak. Ed Lucas plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Marc Maddox, who had doubled in the second inning, tripled in another run. Maddox scored the fourth and final tally of the outburst when Cody Clark laid down a two-out, bunt single.
The Royals added two more runs in the fourth - one earned - off 19-year old right-hander Jordan Lyles (0-2). Irving Falu's third single in as many at-bats on the night produced the first run and he scored on a throwing error by Express right fielder Drew Locke.
Heavy rains forced the grounds crew to cover the field after the top of the fifth and just over a half-hour later, the umpires called it an official game.
Omaha (76-62) improved to 6-5 on its final home stand ever at Rosenblatt. The Royals are 10-4 against Round Rock (55-83) this season.
Game three of the four-game series is Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Kansas City righty Brian Bannister (0-1, 6.75) will make his third rehab start for Omaha, facing Round Rock right-hander Josh Banks (9-10, 3.91).
