Rainiers Cruise Past Colorado Springs, 6-3

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers came out on top in a 6-3 series-opening win over Colorado Springs at Cheney Stadium on Monday.

With the game tied at 3-3 through four innings, Tacoma broke things open with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth frame. Outfielder Greg Halman doubled to center field, scoring first baseman Justin Smoak for the go-ahead run. One out later, Halman scored on Rob Johnson's single to left field to up the Rainiers advantage to 5-3.

Dustin Ackley was responsible for tying things in the fourth inning, notching one of his two RBI after grounding out to into a force and scoring designated hitter Brad Nelson from third.

The first two of Tacoma's runs came in the second and third innings, with Ackley hitting a sacrifice fly and Halman belting a solo shot in the next inning.

The outfielder Halman led the Rainiers lineup, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBI. The homer was Halman's 31st of the season and ties him with Kelvin Moore for fourth place on Tacoma's all-time single-season home run list.

Tacoma starter Mauricio Robles earned the win, his second with the Rainiers this season, after holding the Sky Sox to two runs, three earned, on five hits over five innings. The left-hander walked four and struck out four in the winning effort.

Starter Josh Muecke was dealt his eighth loss of the season with Colorado Springs following a night where the right-hander surrendered five runs on eight hits over six innings, while walking three and fanning two.

Tacoma's lead over Salt Lake for first place in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Northern Division remains at 3.5 games. The Bees beat Fresno 15-11 on Monday night.

The Rainiers take the field for the second game of their four-game set with the Sky Sox at 7pm on Tuesday. Tacoma is scheduled to start right-hander Yusmeiro Petit (3-2, 5.72) in the outing, with Colorado Springs scheduled to send left-hander Ching Lung Lo (0-0, -.--) to the mound.
