(Binghamton, NY) - The Portland Sea Dogs (12-11) trailed 5-0 after two innings but scored 11 of the game's final 12 runs to grab the series opener from the Binghamton Mets (11-11), 11-6 on Monday night at NYSEG Stadium in front of 2,654 fans. RF Reid Engel (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) blasted a 3-run homer off LHP Roydrick Merritt (0-2) in the eighth inning to give Portland their first lead at 7-5. The homer was the first for Engel in Double-A and capped off a 5-run inning.
RHP Chad Rhoades (1-0) worked a perfect seventh to earn his first win of the season. Merritt, who suffered his second loss, has both blown saves against the Sea Dogs in which he has given up all six of his runs on the year. Portland has erased two 5-run deficits to win this season - both against the B-Mets and Merritt.
SS Argenis Diaz went 4-for-5 with 4 RBI (Double-A career-high). Diaz knocked in Portland's first run in the fourth inning and delivered a 2-run single in the sixth inning to bring the âDogs within two runs. LF Aaron Bates blasted a lead-off homer in the eighth inning and went 2-for-4, improving his consecutive on-base streak to 14 games.
Portland starter RHP Jarod Plummer allowed eight hits and five runs over four innings. The B-Mets scored four runs with two outs in the first inning. LF D.J. Wabick (3-for-5, 3 RBI) cleared the bases with a double and DH Josh Peterson added an RBI single.
The Sea Dogs scored eight runs on eight hits in the final two innings. CF Bubba Bell (2-for-4) reached base three times, C Juan Apodaca finished 3-for-5, RBI.
The Sea Dogs are 3-1 on their 7-game roadtrip and take on the Mets Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium beginning at 6:35 PM.
