Altoona Curve News Release
LAST NIGHT:
The Erie SeaWolves (AA - Detroit) completed a three-game sweep of the Altoona Curve, scoring a combined seven runs in the final two innings of the contest to best the home squad, 7-3 at Blair County Ballpark.
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE:
The Altoona Curve and Akron Aeros (AA - Cleveland) will lock horns for the eighth time this season, but it is the first meeting at Blair County Ballpark.
SCOUTING THE AEROS:
Akron boasts the best record in the Eastern League and has won its last five contests...Many individuals on the squad lead the Eastern League in a number of categories...Carlos Santana has six HR (T-1st) and 19 RBI (3rd) and Jose Constanza has 10 steals (1st)...RHP Vinnie Pestano has nine saves (T -1st).
VERTIGO:
The early part of the Curve's 2009 Eastern League schedule is so unbalanced that they will play only three teams through the first 31 games of the 2009 season. Erie, Akron and Reading have been the team's only three opponents this season, and will continue to be until May 11 when Altoona visits Harrisburg.
SERIESOUSLY SPEAKING:
The Altoona Curve have dropped five of its seven games against the Aeros...in the head-to-head season matchup, Akron prospect Jose Constanza is hitting .526 (10x19) with 4 RBI in the series...RHP Neil Wagner is 3-0 against the Curve this season...Altoona's Hector Gimenez is doing well against Aeros' arms, swinging the bat at a .353 clip (6x17)
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS:
RHP Jared Hughes will toe the rubber tonight for Altoona, making his fifth start of the season and to snap a personal three-game losing skid. Hughes has made one start against the Aeros (L, 4/23, 3.2ip, 5h, 7r, 0er, 4bb)
RHP Hector Rondon will get the ball for Akron tonight making his fifth start of the season. Rondon is tied for the Eastern League lead with four wins, being victorious in each outing this season. He is 1-0 against the Curve this year in one outing (5/2, 5.2ip, 4h, 1r, 1er, 5k)...The 21-year old Rondon was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2004 out of Guatire, VZ. He spent the entire 2008 season with Kinston (A) compiling an 11-6 record with a 3.60 ERA.
WHO SHOT THE SHERRIF?
LHP Shawn Nottingham has appeared in 10 games for the Altoona Curve and has performed well (0-1, 3.38). However, the team is 0-10 in games in which he appears.
OUCH BABE:
Altoona has been outscored 27-6 over the first three games of their seven-game homestand.
