Portland goes 4-3 on their opening homestand of the season

(Portland, ME)- The New Britain Rock Cats (2-5) used four Portland (4-3) errors to salvage the final game of the series, 6-3 on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs take 2 of 3 from the ‘Cats and begin a 7-game road trip on Thursday night in Binghamton, NY.

RHP Zach Ward (1-0) worked two scoreless frames to pick up the win for New Britain. LHP Jose Lugo (hold), RHP Rob Delaney (hold) and RHP Anthony Slama (save #1) closed out the game with scoreless frames to secure the Rock Cats second win in seven contests.

RHP Bryce Cox (0-1) allowed three runs (one earned) over one and 1/3 innings to take his first loss of the year for Portland. RHP Adam Mills took a no-decision, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) in 5.2 IP.

New Britain snapped a 3-3 tie with two runs in the seventh inning off Cox. RF Joe Gaetti reached on an error by 3B Iggy Suarez to start the frame. LF Matt Moses followed with a single and CF Juan Portes gave New Britain a 4-3 advantage with a run-scoring single to right field. 2B Brian Dinkelman's groundout to second base scored Moses. The final run scored in the eighth inning on a bases-loaded walk induced by RHP T.J. Large.

Portland caught a huge break in the second inning, leading to the game's first 2 runs. DH Jon Still blasted a 2-run homer over the Maine Monster on a 3-2 pitch, giving the ‘Dogs a 2-0 lead. During that at-bat, Still looked retired on a pop-up behind home plate but C Wilson Ramos dropped the ball.

The Rock Cats came right back to tie the game off Mills in third inning. SS Yancarlos Ortiz and Dinkelman delivered back-to-back singles with one-out. 3B Danny Valencia reached on a bloop-single to shallow right-center field, allowing Dinkelman and Ortiz to score. On the play, CF Josh Reddick almost made a diving catch but the ball popped out of his glove and was charged with an error, enabling the second run to score.

In the top of the fourth inning, CF Juan Portes knocked in the go-ahead run with a run-scoring double to right field. Portland came right back in their half of the fourth on a sacrifice-fly by 3B Iggy Suarez.

Notes...Still's home run was the first 2-run blast of the season and the first home run not to lead-off an inning...Mills stays winless in 13 career Double-A starts...Reddick's outfield assist was the team's first of 2009...Wagner picked up his team-leading 9th walk of the season.
