Connecticut Defenders News Release

MANCHESTER, NH- Free passes were being handed out at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium on Wednesday night as the Defenders fell to New Hampshire 2-0 but took the series 2-1.

Similar to last night, both teams entered into a pitchers duel. The action picked up in the bottom of the eighth inning when Defenders reliever RHP-Waldis Joaquin walked the bases loaded after retiring the first two batters. Connecticut Manager, Steve Decker called upon RHP-Steven Edlefsen to get the final out but a wild pitch to the backstop would plate the first run of the game. Edlefsen would walk two straight forcing in another run to make it 2-0 New Hampshire. A 1,2,3 ninth would give the Fisher Cats their only win of the series.

Connecticut squandered opportunities but the best chance came in the fifth inning when 2B-Sharlon Scoop leadoff with a hit followed by a 3B-David Maroul bunt single. Both would advance on a pass ball to set up runners in scoring position with no outs but Fisher Cats starter, LHP-Fabio Castro retired the next three in order. Castro finished with six scoreless innings of four hit ball while walking one and striking out two.

New Hampshire's reliever RHP-David Shinskie (1-0) picked up his first win striking out one in just a lone inning. Connecticut's reliever RHP-Waldis Joaquin (0-2) suffered his second loss of the road-trip in 2.2 innings, walked three, struck out four and allowed two earned runs.

The Defenders (4-3) head back to for the home opener Thursday to take on the Trenton Thunder (Yankees) at 6:35pm at Dodd Stadium. RHP-Nick Pereira (0-0) will take the ball against Trenton's RHP-Zach McAllister (0-0).
