Playoff Déjà Vu, Mississippi Meets Gwinnett

April 11, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release

BILOXI, Miss. – For the second straight ECHL postseason, the Mississippi Sea Wolves and Gwinnett Gladiators will duel in the Kelly Cup Playoffs. In 2004, Gwinnett won the opening round best-of-five series, 3 games to 2.

The Mississippi Sea Wolves wrapped up their 2004-05 regular season with seven games in nine days, compiling a record of 2-2-3 down the stretch.

Gwinnett won its last five games in the regular season and as a result the Gladiators jumped past the Sea Wolves into the fourth seed, while Mississippi settled for the fifth seed of the eight teams that qualified in the American Conference.

The best-of-five American Conference Quarterfinals get underway with Game 1 at 6:05 p.m. CT on Wednesday at the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia.

Game 2 shifts back to the Mississippi Coast Coliseum at 8:35 p.m. on Friday, which will be the only game of the series to be held in Biloxi due to a scheduling conflict.

Mississippi finished in fourth place in the ECHL South Division and tied for fifth along with the South Carolina Stingrays in the American Conference with 87 points. Mississippi received the higher seed due to the second step in the ECHL tie-breaking formula, which is points, head-to-head, where the Sea Wolves had four points in the season series compared to two for the Stingrays.

After the 72-game regular season, the Sea Wolves posted a 39-24-9 overall record for 87 points.

The Sea Wolves went 22-11-3 at home, 17-13-6 on the road, 3-4 in overtime games and 8-5 in shootouts.

Last week, Mississippi blanked Texas 3-0 on Tuesday, picked up one point in a 3-2 shootout loss at Louisiana on Thursday, earned another point on Friday in a 5-4 shootout setback against Pensacola before being shutout 1-0 at Pensacola on Saturday.
