The Rochester Plates squared off against Worcester in the third game of a six-game series Thursday night, the third time this season Rochester has donned the Plates threads. A potent Plates offense launched six extra-base hits on their way to a 12-7 victory.
The Plates took the lead in the bottom half of the first for the third consecutive game, courtesy of a two-run double off the bat of DH Wilson Garcia. CF Cody Wilson launched a solo shot an innin ¬â¹g later, his first Triple-A home run, to extend the lead to three.
Worcester answered with a power surge in the third, plating four runs via three home runs to take a 4-3 lead after three innings. SS Richie Martin tied the game in the fourth on an RBI double, and the Plates retook the lead two batters later, as Cody Wilson laid down a safety squeeze to bring in 3B Jeter Downs. Two more runners came around to score on a fielder's choice and an error to give Rochester a 7-4 lead through four innings of play.
The Plates offense stayed hot in the fifth, as Richie Martin roped his second RBI double of the night to extend the lead to four. Worcester cut into the lead in the seventh, scoring a run on a fielder's choice to make the score 8-5. Rochester blew the game open in the bottom of the eighth, as Cody Wilson connected on his second homer of the night, a grand slam to swell the lead to 12-5. Worcester scored a pair of runs in the ninth to close the gap, but it wasn't enough as the Plates took home the win, 12-7.
RHP Paolo Espino (2-1, 2.76) took the ball to start the game for the Plates and earned his second consecutive win. The Panama native worked 5.1 innings, allowing four earned on seven hits while striking out six. LHP Alberto Baldonado, RHP Tommy Romero, RHP Tyler Danish, and RHP Gerson Moreno combined to cover the final 3.2 frames, allowing three earned while striking out three. LHP Brandon Walter took the loss for Worcester.
Cody Wilson, who launched his first pair of Triple-A home runs, was named the Diamond Pro Player of the Game. The West Palm Beach native turned in a 2-for-3 night at the plate with six RBI, which marked the most runs batted in by a Red Wing since Tomas Telis drove in the same number on August 22, 2019.
Rochester is back in action Friday night against Worcester, the fourth of a six-game set. RHP Jose Urena is slated to make his Innovative Field debut as the righty goes up against the Sox southpaw Chris Murphy. First pitch is set for 6:45 pm.
