Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Charleston RiverDogs 4-0 on Thursday at Appalachian Power Park. Three West Virginia pitchers limited Charleston to four hits over nine innings while combining to strike out nine and walk just one in the victory.
Zack Dodson and Jose Ramirez matched zeros over the first three innings. The Power starter surrendered two hits in the second, but escaped unscathed thanks to a double play ball by Gary Sanchez. Dodson also allowed a hit in the fourth, but picked Jose Toussen off first base early in the next at bat.
Ramirez allowed two hits over the first three innings before West Virginia cracked the scoreboard. In the fourth, Mel Rojas Jr. singled, Chase Lyles reached on an error, and Dan Grovatt walked to load the bases with no oneout. Elias Diaz doubled in a pair, and Grovatt later scored on a ground out by Kevin Mort to extend the edge to 3-0.
Grovatt led off the sixth inning with a solo home run over the right field wall. It was the All-Star's sixth long ball of the year and capped the scoring at 4-0.
Dodson (4-3) combined with Casey Sadler and Jason Townsend to shutout the RiverDogs and hold Charleston to just four hits in the game. The effort was the 11th of the season by the Power pitching staff, setting a new club record for shutouts in any one season, surpassing the previous high of 10 by the 2006 edition while West Virginia was still affiliated with Milwaukee. Ramirez (5-7) took the loss after allowing all four runs, two earned, over six innings.
The win snapped the Power's two-game slide, evened this series out at one victory apiece, and gave West Virginia a 7-6 edge in the season series with two games remaining against Charleston this year.
West Virginia and Charleston play the third game of this four-game set on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. Zack Von Rosenberg is scheduled to start for the Power against the RiverDogs' Vidal Nuno. The game will feature an appearance by the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders and a barbeque set giveaway to the first 1,000 fans.
SECOND HALF RECORD: 20-26
OVERALL POWER RECORD: 55-59
