Crawdads Surpass $40,000 in Charitable Donations in 2011

Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, NC - With the recent completion of four more charitable initiatives, the Hickory Crawdads have surpassed $40,000 in donated funds and goods throughout the 2011 calendar year

. The four most recent campaigns have been Social Media Month, Conrad's Self-Esteem Wednesdays, a Relay For Life series and participation in ESPN's "It's Not Crazy, It's Sports" program.

The Crawdads Social Media Month ran from July 10 - August 10, and was a fundraiser based around the Crawdads Facebook Fan Page. The Crawdads donated 10 cents for every new "Like" that the fan page received during that time period to the cancer programs at Levine Children's Hospital.

In response to SI.com writer Peter King's column on May 16, in which the nationally-acclaimed sports writer playfully questioned Conrad the Crawdad's self-esteem, the Crawdads introduced the Conrad's Self-Esteem Wednesdays promotion. During every Wednesday home game since the story was posted, the Crawdads have offered fans a $4 box seat ticket if they say "Conrad's Self-Esteem" at the Ticket Office . The Crawdads then donated $2 from every $4 ticket to Catawba Valley Behavioral Healthcare in support of their ongoing mission to provide behavioral health and support services for those in need in the Unifour region.

The 'Dads also recently teamed up with the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life to provide special ticket deals for Crawdads fans, as well as a way to raise additional funds for a Relay For Life team of their choice. For the games on May 2 and from August 1 - 3, fans could buy a box seat ticket for only $5, and then designate $4 from their ticket purchase to be donated to their chosen Relay For Life team. Before the May 2 game, fans were also encouraged to participate in a "practice walk" around the warning track, and were given a free ticket to a future game this season as a show of the Crawdads appreciation for their participation in this great cause.

In July of 2010, the Crawdads, along with the Charleston River Dogs, participated in the filming of one of ESPN's "It's Not Crazy, It's Sports" commercials. ESPN then allocated funds for both the Crawdads and River Dogs to donate to non-profit organizations in their areas. The 'Dads used those funds to support the Catawba County chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Catawba County United Way, Centro Latino and Second Harvest Food Bank.

"As we continue through the final stretch of the 2011 season and enter the 20th Anniversary Season in 2012, our commitment to finding creative ways of giving back to the Hickory Metro and surrounding communities will remain unwavering," says Crawdads General Manager Mark Seaman.
