Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

GREENSBORO, NC - The Lakewood BlueClaws fell 6-3 to the Greensboro Grasshoppers as they lost their 2nd to Greensboro. Lakewood led it the entire way until the bottom of the 8th inning. Greensboro scored 5 times in the bottom of the 8th inning to erase a 2-1 deficit and take a 2-0 lead in the 4 game series.

It was 2-0 in favor of Lakewood after 3 1/2 innings, and 2-1 BlueClaws going into that dreadful bottom of the 8th inning. Greensboro used 5 singles, a walk, and a very costly throwing error on Lakewood catcher Cameron Rupp to score 5 times in the 8th off of Lakewood reliever Jay Johnson. The loss for Lakewood, combined with a win by Kannapolis pushes the BlueClaws 3.5 games out of 1st place in the SAL Northern Division. That matches Lakewood's biggest deficit of the 2nd Half.

There were some bright spots undoubtedly for Lakewood. Starting Pitcher Ervis Manzanillo had really struggled his last few starts coming into the game, but he pitched great allowing just 1 run on 3 hits of 5 innings. The top of the batting order did their job as well with leadoff hitter Bill Rice going 2-4 with a walk, 2 runs scored and an RBI, plus his first Home Run as a member of the BlueClaws. Carlos Alonso hit 2nd and he went 3-4 with a walk. Also, Anthony Hewitt hit his 13th HR of the season for the BlueClaws.

The BlueClaws will try to turn it around on Friday night as they send out LHP Jesse Biddle (5-7, 3.20 ERA) for game 3 of the 4 game series. Greensboro will counter with RHP Alex Caldera (0-0, 11.25 ERA). First Pitch is schedule for 7:00 pm on Friday.
