Early Runs Lead Suns Past Shorebirds, 6-2

Salisbury, MD. - The Hagerstown Suns (63-52, 23-22) scored five runs in the first three innings en route to a 6-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds (52-64, 17-29) in game two at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday night. Hagerstown pitching held the Shorebirds to just two hits over the first six innings and six hits for the night.
Hagerstown squeezed across two runs in the first on just one hit from Blake Kelso. Matt Bywater walked the leadoff batter of the game and issued three more walks in the top of the first inning. Kelso scored the first run of the evening on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Kevin Keyes picked up his 44th RBI on a groundout to Garabez Rosa that scored Adrian Sanchez. Bywater stranded the bases loaded on a strikeout of Mills Rogers.
The Suns picked up three runs in the third inning off Bywater. Martinson drew a leadoff walk. Adrian Nieto followed with a double. Rogers came through for the Suns with his 16th RBI on a single that scored Jason Martinson. Later in the inning, Kelso connected on his 44th RBI of the season that cashed in Adrian Nieto for the fourth run of the game.
Hagerstown starter Paul Applebee had another very strong start against the shorebirds. The left-hander went five shutout innings, allowing just two hits. He fanned three batters and walked just one. Applebee has pitched ten scoreless innings against Delmarva this season and has surrendered just two hits.
Tim Adleman was solid out of the bullpen. He tossed three scoreless innings and struck out four batters.
Ashur Tolliver entered in the seventh inning and hurled two scoreless innings. Tolliver retired the side in order in the seventh and used a double play to face the minimum in the eighth inning.
Michael Ohlman started the seventh inning with a stand up double, marking the 16th straight game that he has reached base safely. Ohlman would later score on a Rosa RBI groundout up the middle. Brenden Webb was the lone Shorebirds player with multiple hits. He hit a single up the middle in the seventh to set up a Mikey Planeta triple to the right field corner to pull the Shorebirds within 5-2.
Mills Rogers connected on an RBI double against college teammate D.J. Ferguson in the ninth inning to increase the lead to 6-2.
The Shorebirds and Suns will face off Friday night at 7:05 p.m. in game three of the series. The Shorebirds will send David Baker to the hill (2-2, 2.37 ERA) while the Suns counter with left-hander Matt Grace (10-5, 4.60 ERA).
