Southpaws Baffle Tourists

Rome, GA - The Rome Braves defeated the Asheville Tourists 4-2 Thursday night at State Mutual Stadium before a crowd of 2,020. Game three will be tomorrow night at 7pm.

It was a scoreless game until the top of the fifth when Avery Barnes sparked the Asheville offense with a leadoff single. After a walk to put runners and first and second, Barnes later came around to score on an RBI single by Helder Velazquez. Cleanup hitter Kyle Parker capped off the scoring with an RBI fielder's choice giving the Tourists a 2-0 advantage.

Kyle Rose narrowed the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth when he laced a two out RBI single to score Matt Weaver. The Braves stole the lead in the bottom of the sixth when they pushed across two runs making it a 3-2 game. After moving from first to third on an Evan Gattis single, David Rohm scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Tommy La Stella tying the game. One batter later Gattis scooted home on a wild pitch and put Rome on top 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh Ryan Query roped a leadoff double to deep left center and was then was moved over to third on a sac bunt by Rose. Another RBI sacrifice fly, this time by Matt Lipka, scored Query and pushed the Braves' lead to 4-2.

The 4-2 lead would be all the Ronan Pacheco and Matt Chaffee would need as the two southpaws held the Tourists scoreless from the fifth inning on and send the Braves home victors.

Ronan Pacheco (4-6) earns the win for Rome and Tyler Matzek (2-4) takes the loss for Asheville. Matt Chaffee earns his second save of the season.
