Pitching, Hitting Combo Keys to Wings Win

The Rochester Red Wings defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. The win completed a 5-1 homestand for the Wings, who travel to Lehigh Valley for four games and return home on Friday, May 25 for a Memorial Day weekend homestand against Buffalo.

Starting pitcher Aaron Slegers wasted no time giving the Wings a boost, striking out the side on just 13 pitches to open up the Sunday matinee.

Pawtucket threatened in the fourth after a Miguel Sano error and a base hit put a pair of runners on with no outs. Slegers worked out of the jam, retiring the next two hitters to a fly ball and an inning-ending double play to keep the score at 0-0.

After getting runners to third base in each of the first three innings against Red Sox starter Marcus Walden, Rochester cracked the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. After Willians Astudillo was hit by a pitch and stole second base with one away, Nick Buss sliced a ball into left-centerfield to bring home Astudillo, giving the Wings a 1-0 lead. This ended Walden's day as he was replaced by Kyle Martin. Walden went 3.1 innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out one. He threw 62 pitches, 43 for strikes.

Rochester tacked on another run in the fifth after Zack Granite opened up the inning with a bunt single, followed up by a walk to Sano walk. After Ryan LaMarre grounded into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners, Kennys Vargas singled to left field, scoring Granite to give the Wings a 2-0 lead.

After allowing a runner to reach third base in the seventh, Slegers worked out of the jam to end the inning. Slegers' day ended as he went 7.0 innings allowing no runs on five hits while striking out five. He threw 96 pitches, 66 for strikes.

Tyler Duffey came on in the eighth inning, setting down the side in order.

Buss gave Rochester an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning after he belted a lead-off home run into the Wings bullpen which extended the lead to 3-0.

Duffey allowed a two-out hit in the ninth, then struck out Ramlon Flores to end the game.

Granite, Vargas, and Buss each had three hits as the Wings out-hit the PawSox 11-6.

Sano was 0-for-2 with a walk as part of his rehab assignment with the Wings. With the winning decision, Slegers tied for the league lead in wins with five.

NOTES: The Twins have named Double-A outfielder Brent Rooker and Single-A Cedar Rapids right-handed pitcher Brusdar Graterol Twins minor league Player and Pitcher of the Week...in seven games, Rooker hit .323 (10-for31) with three doubles, two home runs, eight RBI, seven runs scored and a .333 on-base percentage...the former Mississippi State outfielder was selected 35th overall in last year's draft in Compensation Round A...Graterol made one start this week for the Kernels, pitching 5.2 shutout innings with two hits allowed, one walk and 10 strikeouts vs. Quad Cities on Monday...he was signed by the Twins on August 29, 2014 from Calabozo, Venezuela.

1992- Rochester third baseman Tommy Shields went 3-4 with a home run and two rbis to lead the Red Wings to a 9-5 victory over Syracuse at MacArthur Stadium. Pitcher Anthony Telford picked up his fifth victory of the season, tying him for the IL lead.

1998- Pete Rose, Jr. crushes the first pitch of the 5th inning over the left field wall in a game at Pawtucket, starting a rally of historic proportions for the Indianapolis Indians. The 10-run inning also includes a two-run homer by Guillermo Garcia, a three-run homer by Jason Williams, and a grand slam by Glenn Murray. Historians believe it is the first time in professional baseball history that a team "homered for the cycle" in a single inning. The 5th-inning outburst carries the Tribe to an 11-4 triumph and helps pitcher Jesus Martinez earn the victory in front of his older brother Pedro, who made the trip down from Boston before making the start later that night at Fenway Park.
