Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The IronPigs outlasted the Syracuse Chiefs on Sunday with a 5-2 win to sweep the series and maintain their lead in the International League North Division.
The two sides traded blows early on. The Pigs scored in the second inning when Trevor Plouffe came home on a misplayed pop up on the infield, but the Chiefs immediately got the run back on an infield single by Jason Martinson. Each team scored another run in the third with a Dylan Cozens single and a groundout by Jose Marmelejos. The IronPigs finally chased Cesar Vargas (0-4) from the game when they took the lead on a bases loaded walk in the fifth inning.
After two perfect innings from reliever David Goforth for Syracuse, the Pigs were able to separate for good when Andrew Pullin launched his second home run of the year - a two-run blast -- over the right field wall.
Jerad Eickhoff picked up the start for Lehigh Valley on a Good Shepard Rehabilitation assignment and allowed only one earned run in three innings. Mark Leiter Jr. (1-0) pitched a scoreless fourth to pick up the victory.
In the fifth inning, reliever Brandon Leibrandt made history for the IronPigs when he retired the Chiefs in order. Dating back to 2017, Liebrandt has now thrown 29.2 consecutive scoreless innings, the most in IronPigs history. Pedro Beato entered in the ninth inning to pick up his League-leading 13th save.
Dylan Cozens went 2-for-5 for the Pigs with a pair of singles and a run driven in, while Trevor Plouffe went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.
The IronPigs return to Coca-Cola Park tomorrow to face the Rochester Red Wings for a four game series starting at 7:05 p.m. Drew Anderson will start for Lehigh Valley.
