Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Coming off a series sweep of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders looked to build some momentum starting Friday night against the Buffalo Bisons. Instead, three days later the Bisons returned the favor capped by a 4-3 victory Sunday at Coca-Cola Field.
In the bottom of the 9th inning the RailRiders trailed 4-2, but threatened off closer Justin Shafer in his first Triple-A outing of the year. In 17.1 innings in Double-A to start the year, he posted a 0.52 ERA with just one earned run allowed. However, The RailRiders began the inning with a double and single and got to within a run following Ryan McBroom's sacrifice fly at 4-3.
Rey Navarro stood at first base still representing the tying run when Zack Zehner grounded into an inning-ending and game-ending 5-4-3 double play to put away the victory for Buffalo.
The scoring began when the RailRiders took their first lead of the series in the top of the fourth inning. With two down, Adam Lind singled to right and Mike Ford walked. Kyle Higashioka then singled home Lind with a base hit to left-centerfield for a 1-0 advantage.
Buffalo responded to take a lead when Jason Leblebijian hit a solo home run off Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter David Hale to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, Buffalo pushed ahead by a run when Anthony Alford walked, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a base hit by Rowdy Tellez.
Zehner tied the game with a solo blast in the top of the 7th inning off Murphy Smith to knock the right-hander from the ballgame tied 2-2.
Buffalo jumped ahead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to take a 4-2 lead, which were all the runs they needed to grab the win before a crowd of 6,339 fans
The RailRiders pile on the bus and make a seven-hour journey east to visit Pawtucket Red Sox at McCoy Stadium for the second time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m., and pregame coverage with Adam Marco and Adam Giardino begins at 5:45 p.m.
