Pitching Delivers the Win

Beloit, WI- The Snappers came out swinging after clinching the Midwest League Western Division Wild Card on Thursday night, taking game one of a three game set against the Burlington Bees.

LHP David Hurlbut started the game out with a strike but soon after that encountered some trouble. The Bees scored first when Bobby Crocker was walked with the bases loaded scoring Eliezer Mesa in the top of the 1st inning. Hurlbut quickly recovered getting a strikeout to end the inning.

The Snappers rallied right back in their half of the frame, getting on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI ground out by Drew Leachman, scoring Nate Roberts, who doubled to start the inning. Steven Liddle then hit an RBI single scoring Pettersen, who singled, giving the Snappers an early 2-1 lead.

The offense outburst continued for the Snappers with a four run bottom of the second. Nate Roberts hit an RBI single, scoring Tyler Grimes who also singled in his at bat. A.J. Pettersen then grounded out scoring Wang-Wei Lin. Drew Leachman continued the hitting parade ripping an RBI triple scoring Pettersen, putting the Snappers up 5-1. The Snappers tacked on their fourth run with an RBI single from Matt Koch, scoring Leachman.

The Bees inched their way back in the top of the third with two solo home runs by B.A. Vollmuth and Rashun Dixon. Hurlbut recoverd, finished the inning and also pitched the fourth. He left the game with six strikeouts.

Hard throwing righty A.J. Achter replaced Hurlbut in the 5th inning. A.J. pitched three scoreless innings including six strikeouts. Corey Williams picked up the two inning save, pitching both the 8th and the 9th inning. Williams did not give up a hit and struck out three.

The Snappers continue their home stand against the Burlington Bees tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. There will be a post-game fireworks show to follow the game. On the mound for the Snappers is Midwest League All-Star, LHP Jason Wheeler (7-2, 3.62 ERA) and he will take on Drew Granier (8-3, 2.95 ERA).
