Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
GENEVA, Ill - The Kernels clicked on all cylinders for the second straight ballgame, blanking the Kane County Cougars 6-0 on Friday evening. It was the Kernels second straight shutout after downing Burlington 8-0 on Thursday night.
Austin Wood (3-5) was brilliant in the start, allowing only four hits through six innings of work. Wood struck out four and walked only two on the night. Joe Melioris, R.J. Alvarez, and Ty Kelley each threw one inning to complete the shutout.
Offensively, the Kernels had at least one hit in every inning.
The Kernels picked up three straight singles with two outs in the 2nd inning to take a 1-0 lead. Zach Wright singled up the middle, and Trevor Hairgrove reached on an infield single. Then, Kevin Moesquit's RBI single to right center scored Wright and tallied the game's first run.
The Kernels took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning. With one out, Eric Stamets struck out but reached 1st base on a passed ball by Kane County catcher Kenny Swab. He later scored on a RBI sacrifice fly to center by Frazier Hall.
In the 5th inning the Kernels took advantage of two errors by Cougars 2nd baseman Danny Mateo to plate a run and take a 3-0 lead. With two outs, Mateo's two consecutive fielding errors allowed both Frazier Hall and Gary Mitchell to reach base. Zach Borenstein then laced a RBI single to center field, scoring Hall and giving Cedar Rapids a three run cushion.
In the 9th inning the Kernels scored three insurance runs to extend the lead to 6-0. Zach Borenstein's 2-RBI double plated Andy Workman and Frazier Hall. Zach Wright then followed with a RBI single to bring Gary Mitchell home.
Andy Ferguson (0-1) took a tough loss, going 5.1 innings. He allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits while striking out three and walking one. Jonathan Dooley pitched 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out none and walking three. Malcom Culver went one scoreless inning.
Kane County committed five errors on the night; four of the errors were by 2nd baseman Daniel Mateo.
