South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

EASTLAKE, OHIO - Gerson Montilla stroked a two-RBI single in the 13th inning Thursday and the South Bend silver Hawks (34-33) held on to beat the Lake County Captains 9-7 at Classic Park. With Bowling Green's loss to West Michigan, the Silver Hawks and Whitecaps are just a game behind the Hot Rods with three games left in the first half.

Right-hander Seth Simmons (3-0) earned the win for the Silver Hawks, allowing just three hits over 2.2 scoreless innings. Jeff Johnson (3-3) took the loss for the Captains, surrendering two earned runs on two hits over three innings.

The Silver Hawks carried a 7-4 lead into the ninth inning, but the Captains rallied to tie the game off right-hander Willy Paredes, who blew his third save of the season. Nick Bartalone scored the tying run on Paredes' strikeout of Luigi Rodriguez that induced a wild pitch. It remained tied 7-7 until the 13th inning.

Montilla paced the Silver Hawks offense, finishing 4-for-7 with four RBIs. Chris Ellison, Roidany Aguila, and Marc Bourgeois each recorded two hits for South Bend.

The Captains left 21 men on base in the game. Both teams recorded 15 hits. The Silver Hawks issued 14 combined walks in the game. The game lasted 4 hours and 32 minutes, the longest Silver Hawks game of the season. Jordan Smith led the Captains with a 4-for-8 performance. The Silver Hawks are 6-3 in extra inning games this season.

The Silver Hawks return home to begin a three-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps. Archie Bradley (6-4, 3.94) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by righty Brennan Smith (1-3, 3.60). Friday is also a Flatscreen Friday presented by HH Gregg with a postgame fireworks show presented by 1st Source Bank and Sunny 101.5. Tickets are available for purchase by calling 235-9988 or online at www.silverhawks.com.
