Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons (33-35) held on Friday night at Dow Diamond in front of 4,191 fans to snag the 7-6 victory over the Midwest League's best Lansing Lugnuts (46-21), set-up by a superb five-inning start from Arismendy Ozoria.
Ozoria cruised through his first four innings, facing two more than the minimum and striking out six before allowing his first hit.
"He was throwing well and locating well," catcher Pratt Maynard said after the game. "I didn't have to do much more than call the pitch, because I knew he was going to throw it into the glove...No hits through four, what else can you ask for from a starter?... Hopefully we can use this momentum and carry this over into the second half."
Ozoria surrendered two hits in the fifth, but added one more strikeout to finish with seven and three walks. His fastball was holding steady at 93-94. The Dominican earned the win for his five innings, his first since April, where he had three.
Adding to Ozoria's success was a Loons offense that produced six runs on seven hits over the first five innings. Getting things started in the first was Nick Akins' infield single scoring Jesus Arredondo, followed by a two-run single from James Baldwin in the second. The Loons found three two-out runs in the fifth, one from Angelo Songco's single and two from Scott Schebler's 20th double of the season. Baldwin stuck a line drive into the bottom of the right-field wall for a triple in the seventh and came home to record the Loons seventh run, proving to be crucial after the Loons bullpen surrendered six runs.
Two players made their Loons debuts in the outing: the first, third baseman Jeff Hunt, who went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts, drawing one walk and scoring a run in the second. The other, Juan Rodriguez, made his return to Dow Diamond by allowing four earned runs on three hits in 0.1 innings of work. Rodriguez made 12 appearances for the Loons in 2011.
Loons closer Yimi Garcia secured the win in the ninth with two strikeouts to record his 11th save of the season.
The Loons play game five of their six-game homestand on Saturday night at Dow Diamond as Loons RHP Gustavo Gomez (4-6, 5.40) makes the start against the Lugnuts LHP Justin Nicolino (2-0, 1.34) at 7:05 p.m. The game will be followed by a Fireworks Loontacular, powered by Dow Corning.
