Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - The Eastern League's best pitching staff through the first week of the season shined again on Friday night as the first-place Altoona Curve defeated the Akron RubberDucks, 2-1, at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
It was the third straight victory for the Curve (5-3), who have held opposing teams to one run or less in four of the last five games. Akron (3-5) has been held to two runs or less in four of their last five games.
Making his second Double-A start, Altoona right-hander Tyler Glasnow (Win, 1-0) retired the first eight batters of the game, working six innings while allowing one earned run on four hits and seven strikeouts. Curve starting pitchers have combined to post a 0.42 ERA in the first seven games of the season.
The only runs of the night for the Curve came in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out-two-run double by shortstop Gift Ngoepe, who finished the night 1-for-2.
Reliever Tyler Sample (Hold, 1) worked scoreless two innings after Glasnow's departure, allowing just two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Collin Balester (Save, 1) worked around one hit in the ninth.
Altoona first baseman Josh Bell failed to reach base for the first time in 2015, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
Back-to-back doubles produced the only Akron run on the game, with center fielder Todd Hankins driving in Ollie Linton with two outs in the top of the third inning.
Akron starting pitcher Shawn Morimando (Loss, 0-1) had nine strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks.
The Curve continue the season-opening home stand on Saturday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field with right-hander Chad Kuhl (1-0, 1.80) on the mound. Akron starts righty Michael Clevinger (0-1, 1.50).
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Saturday's game will be followed by a Fireworks Show and Kids Run the Bases. It is also National Crime Victim's Rights Night, presented by Family Services, Inc., and Victim Witness of Blair County.
