New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats held on to win Friday evening's game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats by the score of 4-3.
New Britain's bats were working early - loading up the bases with just one out in the bottom of the first inning. Fisher Cats starter RHP Casey Lawrence was touched for three runs on four hits - giving up an RBI single to CF Mike Tauchman that scored DH David Dahl and LF Noel Cuevas pushed two more runners across on a single that fell just in front of LF Dwight Smith.
Rock Cats starter RHP Shane Carle, who hurled a seven-inning shutout in his first start of the year against New Hampshire back on April 12th, finally gave up his first run of 2015 in the top of the third inning. DH Jake Fox doubled to the gap in left-center, driving in SS Shane Opitz who led off the frame with a double of his own.
The Cats' struck again in the bottom half of the third, going up by the score of 4-1. Tauchman sent a sacrifice fly deep enough to left field that gave SS Trevor Story enough time to scamper ahead of the leftfielder Smith's throw.
New Hampshire picked up two runs in the top of the seventh on the power of an RBI single from CF Matt Newman and an infield popup that heeled off of Langfels's glove, allowing Newman to come around to score the Fisher Cats' third run of the game.
Fans had to hold their breath in the top of the eighth - following a double from RF Ryan Schimpf and a balk from LHP Jason Gurka that advanced him to third, the southpaw then walked Newman to give the visitors runners on first and third with two outs. LHP Kraig Sitton came out of the bullpen and ran a full count on Opitz but ultimately induced a fly out to deep right to preserve the lead.
Carle pitched very well for the home club, allowing the two runs and scattered nine hits over 6 2/3 innings of work, walking none and striking out five. His record improves to 2-0. RHP Austin House converted his second save in as many nights.
Lawrence suffered the loss, dropping to 0-2. He lasted six innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two.
LHP Yohan Flande, who logged Major League time with the Rockies in 2014, will take the mound for the Rock Cats on Saturday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 1:35 p.m. New Hampshire will start RHP Mike Lee.
