Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The Fightin Phils (4-3) didn't disappoint on opening night in Baseballtown as they defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels (3-4) 7-1 behind Aaron Nola's strong performance in his second start.
Aaron Nola (1-1) struggled a bit coming out of the gate in the top of the first inning as he loaded the bases with one out as he would then face Javier Herrera. Herrera would groundout into a double-play to end the Flying Squirrels only scoring threat of the night.
The Fightin Phils got busy scoring in the bottom of the third inning off Jack Snodgrass(1-1) as Aaron Altherr in his return to Reading hit a RBI double to score Roman Quinn who led off the inning with a single then stole second. Brock Stassi would hit a two-run single in the next at bat to score Carlos Alonso and Altherr to give the Fightin Phils a 3-0 lead.
Reading would add more in the bottom of the 4th inning as Roman Quinn would add an RBI single to score KC Serna to jump start the inning off Snodgrass. Brock Stassi walked with the bases loaded to score Quinn for the second run of the inning. Snodgrass would leave the game for Pedro Rodriguez who gave up a sacrifice fly to Cameron Perkins that scored Carlos Alonso for a consecutive three-run inning and give Reading a 6-0 lead.
Nola left after six innings of work as he gave up just four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Elvis Araujo pitched a scoreless top of the 7th inning despite throwing 26 pitches. Richmond scored a run in the top of the 8th inning off Nefi Ogando as Daniel Carbonell hit into a RBI groundout to score Rando Moreno to cut the Fightins lead to 6-1.
The Fightin Phils scored their final run in the bottom of the 8th inning off Jose Casilla as Aaron Altherr hit a RBI single to give the Fightins a 7-1 lead.
