Akron RubberDucks News Release
Summary
Altoona righthander Tyler Glasnow earned his first Double-A win on Friday night, tossing six innings and striking out seven batters in a 2-1 win over the Akron RubberDucks at People's Natural Gas Field.
Turning Point
Shortstop and number-nine hitter Gift Ngoepe stroked a two-run double off Akron starter Shawn Morimando (0-1) in the bottom of the second inning to give the Curve (5-3) a 2-0 lead. Ngoepe, who entered the game hitting .174, drove home Stetson Allie who had singled, and Eric Wood, who reached on a walk.
Mound Presence
Glasnow, 21, is regarded as Pittsburgh's top pitching prospect. The 6-foot-8, 225-pound phenom allowed just one run over his six innings. After retiring the first eight hitters to start the game, he allowed back-to-back doubles by Ollie Linton and Todd Hankins in the third inning to make it 2-1, but clamped down after that and allowed no further runs. Glasnow (1-0) did not issue a walk and fanned seven. He mixed his mid-90's fastball with a devastating curve ball to keep the RubberDucks hitters off balance all night. After blowing a save chance on Thursday, closer Colin Balester worked around a two-out single in the ninth to pick up the save.
Duck Tales
Morimando fanned a season-high, nine batters, but left after throwing 90 pitches in 4 2/3 innings. He walked two and surrendered only four hits. Linton was 2-3 on the night to raise his average to .455. He stole his third base of the season in the eighth.
Notes
The first-place Curve have won both games of the series by identical 2-1 scores... The RubberDucks (3-5) have scored just four runs in the last three games...Hankins' RBI double in the third dropped into right field in between Stetson Allie and second baseman Max Moroff. He then stole third base, his third of the season, but was stranded when Glasnow fanned Jordan Smith ...Bryson Myles sat out his second straight game with a sore right hamstring...Time of game: 2:34...Attendance: 2,727.
Up Next
