Pitching Continues to Carry Travs Tuesday
June 3, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Arkansas Travelers News Release
San Antonio, TX - For the third time in four meetings, the Arkansas Travelers edged the San Antonio Missions 1-0 at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium on Monday evening.
After sweeping last week's three-game series in North Little Rock and winning two of the three games 1-0, the Travelers got fantastic efforts from LHP Nate Smith (W, 5-4), LHP Chris O'Grady (H, 7) and RHP Danny Reynolds (S, 3) to combine for the shutout.
Smith allowed a base runner in each of his six innings of work, but worked in and out of jams. In total, the southpaw allowed seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Smith stranded runners in scoring position in four of his six innings. The 23 year-old moved into the top 10 (ninth) in the league with a 3.43 season ERA. He also leads the Texas League with 58 strikeouts.
O'Grady tossed two perfect innings after Smith and struck out four of the six batters he faced.
Reynolds earned his third-straight save for the Travs.
Arkansas mustered only three hits, but took advantage of a defensive miscue in the seventh. With two outs, LF D'Arby Myers struck out but reached first on a passed ball. After Myers stole second for the second time in the game, C Anthony Bemboom lined a two-out single to right-center to score the game's lone run.
The two teams combined to go 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
Major Leaguer on rehab RHP Brandon Morrow tossed four scoreless innings in his first outing since San Diego placed him on the Disabled list with right shoulder inflammation at the end of April.
With the win and a Northwest Arkansas loss, the Travs improved to 29-21 (15-7 on the road) and moved to within 2.5 games of the Naturals in the Texas League North.
Arkansas and San Antonio will play the middle game of the three game series on Wednesday. First pitch at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium is schedule for 7:05 p.m.
