Travs Blank Missions in Opener
June 3, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio limited Arkansas to just three hits in Tuesday's series opener at Wolff Stadium, but came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision.
The home crowd Tuesday night was treated to a rehab start from San Diego Padres' right-hander Brandon Morrow, who joined the club earlier in the day. Morrow looked sharp, allowing just two hits and one walk over four scoreless innings. The 30-year-old hurler threw 31 of his 54 pitches for strikes.
Morrow was followed by right-hander Bryan Rodriguez, who did not allow a hit over the next two and two-thirds innings. Rodriguez (3-7) would have pitched three innings, but a dropped third strike by catcher Griff Erickson allowed D'Arby Myers to reach first. San Antonio next called to the pen and summoned right-hander Dennis O'Grady. After Myers stole second to get into scoring position, catcher Anthony Bemboom drove in the game's only run with a single into right center.
Despite outhitting Arkansas 7-3, San Antonio's ability to plate runs continued Tuesday. Winning starter Nate Smith (5-4) scattered seven hits and four walks over six scoreless innings, adding six strikeouts. The biggest threat for Smith came in the sixth when he escaped a bases-loaded jam by getting Alberth Martinez (a game-high three hits on the night) to pop out to third base.
Relievers Chris O'Grady (four K's in two innings) and Danny Reynolds (3rd save) completed Arkansas' third 1-0 victory over San Antonio this season
San Antonio (20-30) resumes its three-game series against Arkansas (29-21) Wednesday with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. Elliot Morris (1-4, 3.91) will toe the slab for the Missions, while the Travs counter with fellow righty Kyle McGowin (4-2, 4.66).
Notes: In addition to Morrow joining the club, San Diego announced earlier Tuesday that RHP Chris Smith had been transferred to Triple-A El Paso. In two starts with the Missions, Smith allowed just one run on five hits and two walks, while fanning 11 over 10 innings. There is no corresponding move at this time.
