Hooks Walk Away from Naturals
June 3, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Conrad Gregor drew an eighth-inning, bases-loaded walk - the third straight free pass issued by Sam Selman - for the go-ahead run in Corpus Christi's 3-2 win over Northwest Arkansas Wednesday night at Whataburger Field before 3,919.
Jio Mier provided insurance with a fielder's choice RBI as the Hooks improved to 35-16.
That cushion was critical as the Naturals (31-20) subsequently posted a run, Balbino Fuenmayor (one-out single) scoring on third baseman Colin Moran's miscue.
Selman (1-1) was tagged for a lead-off single by Teoscar Hernandez to open the eighth and after Andrew Aplin's sacrifice bunt, walked Tyler White, Moran, and Gregor in succession.
Kyle Westwood (3-2) earned the win by pitching three scoreless innings. Westwood allowed two hits and struck out a pair. Jandel Gustave notched his sixth save.
The Hooks hung a first-inning run on J.C. Sulbaran. Hernandez stroked a one-out single to left, advanced to third on Aplin's single up the middle and home when Moran produced a sacrifice fly.
A sac fly produced Northwest Arkansas' first (only) score, an unearned tally off Mark Appel. Hooks right fielder Hernandez misplayed Parker Morin's deep fly into a three-base error. Lane Adams, the next hitter, flew to center.
Appel proved proficient, permitting two hits and striking out three over five frames and 62 pitches (41 strikes).
Sulbaran went an inning deeper, logging seven hits, a walk, and three strikeouts.
Westwood dodged a bullet in the sixth, Adams (single/stolen base) cut down at the plate by Moran on a contact play.
Mier has an 11-game hitting streak, Corpus Christi second baseman Tony Kemp an 8-gamer.
Texas League wins leader Chris Devenski (6-0) takes the ball for Corpus Christi Thursday at 7:05 vs. Luke Farrell (0-1). The 1965 Solomon Coles High School state championship team will be honored in pregame ceremonies. Coles 1965 team posters are presented to all fans by Hurricane Alley and Brewster Street Ice House, the Green Hornets available for autographs on the concourse from 5:30-6:30.
That club captured Corpus Christi's first high school Texas baseball title. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
