
Beamer Weems Set to Join Frisco Tonight

SPRINGFIELD, MO. (JUNE 3, 2015) - Today the Texas Rangers have signed infielder Beamer Weems to a minor league contract and have assigned him to the roster of the Frisco RoughRiders. Prior to signing with the Rangers, Weems played for the Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League. He will be active for the RoughRiders' game in Springfield this evening.
Weems, 27, appeared in 36 games for the Skeeters and hit .308 (41 for 133) with 13 doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI, 18 runs scored, 12 walks, 18 strikeouts, .380 on-base percentage, .474 slugging percentage and .854 OPS. He reached base safely in 26 straight games from May 2 to June 1 and led the Atlantic League in doubles, ranked fourth in extra-base hits and was tenth in batting average.
Originally an eighth round selection by the San Diego Padres in 2008 out of Baylor University, Weems played in the Padres farm system through just before the start of spring training in 2014. He was a member of the San Antonio Missions in 2008, 2010 and 2011 and reached Triple-A in 2012. In 318 games in affiliated ball, the right-hander has hit .236/.349/.353 with 63 doubles, five triples, 17 home runs and 132 RBI. He owns a .965 fielding percentage and has committed just 44 errors in more than 1,200 career chances.
At Baylor, Weems played in 175 games, hitting .296/.387/.504 with 24 home runs, 41 doubles, 12 triples, 24 home runs and 136 RBI. Upon his departure from Waco, he held career rankings at Baylor in the following categories: first in home runs by a shortstop (17), tied for sixth in sacrifices (23), eighth in Big 12 batting average (.342), tied for fifth in Big 12 triples, eighth in Big 12 slugging percentage (.580) and tied for third in Big 12 sacrifices (10).
