Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals collected their third consecutive win with a 7-2 victory against the Frisco RoughRiders before 2,807 fans at Hammons Field on Wednesday night. Springfield has guaranteed the series win against Frisco and goes for the sweep in the series finale on Thursday night at 7:10pm.
After both sides were kept off the board in the first inning, both swung onto the board in the second. The RoughRiders (21-31) struck first in the top of the second against RHP Arturo Reyes (W, 2-2). With two away, 3B Edwin Garcia lined a double to right-center field. 1B Trever Adams then drove an RBI single to right field, bringing in Garcia for the first run of the game and the early 1-0 Frisco lead.
The Cardinals (19-33) responded right away in the bottom of the second against RHP Jose Leclerc (L, 2-2). With one down, LF Breyvic Valera skipped a single through the middle of the infield, the first of his three hits on the night. Valera then trotted home on a mammoth two-run home run to center field by 2B Bruce Caldwell, lifting Springfield into the 2-1 lead. It was Caldwell's first home run in Double-A and marked his fourth straight game with an RBI since being promoted from High-A Palm Beach last Friday.
Reyes made quick work of the RoughRiders in the top of the third by striking out the side, before Springfield stretched the lead in the bottom of the third. DH Jeremy Hazelbaker led off with a walk. With Hazelbaker taking off on a pitch, 1B David Washington ripped a comebacker to the mound that hit off of Leclerc. Leclerc tracked down the ball and tagged out Washington on the first base line, but Hazelbaker was able to race to third on the play. RF Nick Martini then pulled an RBI double down the right field line, bringing home Hazelbaker. Valera quickly followed with an RBI base hit to center field, scoring Martini for the 4-1 advantage.
The RoughRiders started chipping away right away in the top of the fourth. Leading off the inning, SS Drew Robinson skied a solo home run to right field, decreasing the Frisco deficit to 4-2.
Reyes, though, wrapped up the rest of the fourth in scoreless fashion before leaving runners on the bases in the fifth. He finished with just the two runs allowed on six hits while striking out a season-high seven batters through five innings of work.
After RHP Jordan Swagerty tossed a 1-2-3 top of the sixth inning, the Cardinals got back on the attack in the bottom of the sixth. With one away and LHP Victor Payano on the mound, 3B Patrick Wisdom tattooed a solo home run to left-center field, increasing the lead to 5-2 with his second long-ball of the year. Following the homer, C Alberto Rosario reached on an infield single inside the third base line, before moving to second base on a bunt single from CF Charlie Tilson. Both runners tagged and advanced to third and second on a fly out from SS Aledmys Diaz, putting both in scoring position with two down. Hazelbaker then ripped a two-run single through the right side, scoring both Rosario and Tilson to make it a 7-2 lead.
The good relief work then continued for the Cardinals with a scoreless seventh by RHP Ronnie Shaban, before RHP Joey Donofrio struck out the side around a single in the eighth. RHP Kyle Barraclough took over for the ninth and dealt a pair of strikeouts in the 1-2-3 final frame, closing the 7-2 win for Springfield.
