Pirates Top Crunch For Seventh Straight Win

Portland, Maine - Philip Gogulla, Jeff Cowan and T.J. Brennan each scored for the Portland Pirates as they extended their season-long winning streak to seven games with a 3-1 win over the Syracuse Crunch in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,450 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The victory helped the Pirates improve to 28-16-5-2 on the season. Jared Aulin registered the lone goal for the Crunch, who saw a six-game winning streak come to an end. Syracuse is now 22-24-3-3. Cowan netted the opening goal of the game with just under three minutes remaining in the first to give the Pirates a 1-0 advantage through 20 minutes of play. Neither team scored in the second allowing the Pirates to carry a one-goal lead into the third. Gogulla lifted the Pirates into a two-goal lead early in the third but Aulin answered to make it a one-goal game midway through the final period. Brennan added an insurance marker on the Power play to complete the scoring.

Kyle Wanvig collected an assist in the game, the 500th of his pro career, to extend his point-scoring streak to five games (1-4-5). Aulin's third-period goal ended Jhonas Enroth's shutout streak at 167:53.

The Pirates out shot the Crunch 29-27 in thegame. The Allied Home Mortgage Three stars of the game were all from the Pirates. Gogulla was the first, Enroth the second and Cowan the third.

The Pirates get back at it tomorrow (Saturday) night when the Adirondack Phantoms visit for another Labatt Blue Light Hockey Night in Portland.
