Syracuse Crunch News Release

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch scored less than three goals in a game for the first time in 12 contests, falling to the Portland Pirates tonight by a 3-1 count at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The loss snaps the Crunch's season-high six-game win streak.

Jared Aulin scored the only Crunch goal, his team-leading 15th of the season, at the 8:32 mark of the third period to pull the Crunch to within one after falling behind 2-0.

Portland's Jeff Cowan opened the scoring with slightly under three minutes to play in the first period, when he snuck in behind the Crunch defense and tucked a backhand passed Kevin Lalande under the crossbar to make it 1-0.

The game was scoreless for the entire second stanza until Portland extended its lead to 2-0 when Philip Gogulla found a rebound off a Matt Caruana shot and buried it past an outstretched Lalande just two and a half minutes into the third.

Aulin cut the Crunch deficit in half when he went top shelf with a wrister over the glove of Jhonas Enroth six minutes later.

Portland sealed the game when Grant Clitsome was called for high-sticking at the 12:22 mark and scored on the ensuing power play. Cowan moved the puck back to the point where T.J. Brennan fired it on net. Brennan's shot found its way through a screened Lalande to put Portland up 3-1.

Lalande stopped 26 of 29 bids while his counterpart Enroth turned away 26 of 27 Crunch shots.

Syracuse's mini three-game road swing continues tomorrow night in Manchester as the Crunch face the Monarchs for the first time in their history at Verizon Wireless Arena at 7 p.m.
