Pink Ice, Pink Jerseys for the Gladiators This Weekend

February 10, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release

DULUTH, Ga. - The Gladiators 8th Annual "Pink in the Rink" charity fundraiser is this weekend - Saturday, February 14th and Sunday, February 15th - as the Gladiators host both the South Carolina Stingrays and the Greenville Road Warriors at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.

In what has become a local sensation and fan favorite, the Gladiators will also skate on a pink ice surface during the games over the weekend. It will be the eighth consecutive season that the Gladiators will skate on pink ice, and the ninth time in team history that the team has skated on colored ice during a home game. (The ice was dyed green for St. Patrick's Day on March 17th during the 2006-2007 season.)

To celebrate the weekend, the Gladiators will wear a special black and pink jersey that will be worn for this weekend only. The jersey follows the tradition of the team wearing a specialty, "one weekend only" jersey around the second half of the season.

"Last summer, our President/General Manager Steve Chapman told me he wanted to do a Valentine's Day design for our specialty jerseys, so I started by taking a look at the stock designs Athletic Knit offers," said Gladiators Director of Media, Game Operations, and Merchandise, Christi Johnson. "The key with anything pink related is to find that nice balance between achieving a Valentine's (or breast cancer) look without making it something overwhelmingly pink.

"Inspiration finally struck, so I whipped my thoughts up into a couple designs. We took a vote in the office on a few variations of the two designs, and what you see today is what won. The specialty jersey is always a huge deal for our fans. We only do one per season - by design - so the impact really kicks in once the reveal rolls around. Plus - when we're able to partner it with our Pink in the Rink weekend, it just makes the experience that much more special."

"Pink in the Rink" is the Gladiators highest-profile annual fundraising effort, netting almost $400,000 to benefit numerous local charities in North Georgia over the past seven years. This season, the Gladiators have teamed up with "The Sport of Giving", the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and Kennesaw State's Zeta Tau Alpha as the primary beneficiaries of the two-game "Pink in the Rink" weekend. These and other organizations are selling Gladiators fundraising tickets to help raise money for their cause, with the opportunity to receive a portion of the proceeds from various team-sponsored fundraising activities associated with "Pink In The Rink".

Fans who wish to participate and make a donation to the Gladiators fundraising efforts will have the opportunity to stop by one of the organization's tables on the main concourse at either of the games to make a donation. In addition, the Gladiators will be selling an abundance of pink (and Pink in the Rink related) gear throughout the weekend with a portion of the proceeds from each sale going towards the fundraising.

For tickets and schedule information, visit the official team website at www.gwinnettgladiators.com or call the main office line at 770-497-5100.

The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the nation's premier "AA" hockey league, and are affiliated with the Arizona Coyotes of the NHL. All home games are played at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth - where parking is always free.
