Pineda Named Minor League Player of the Year Finalist

Tacoma, WA - Tacoma Rainiers right-handed pitcher Michael Pineda has been named one of five finalists for the 2010 USA Today Minor Player of the Year award.

Additional candidates include OF Dominic Brown (Phillies), 1B Freddie Freeman (Braves), RHP Jeremy Hellickson (Rays) and 3B Mike Moustakas (Royals).

The distinction is in its 22nd year and has previously been awarded to current Major Leaguers such as Josh Hamilton, Josh Beckett and Prince Fielder.

USA Today will announce the winner in early September.

Pineda leads the Mariners farm system with a 149 strikeouts over 24 starts and 135.2 innings of work this season.

He was named the PCL Pitcher of the Week for the period of June 28-July 4 after combining to strike out 21 batters over two starts during that span.

The 21-year-old Dominican native is a combined 11-4 with a 3.05 ERA over his first-ever stints at the Double-A and Triple-A levels.
