I-Cubs Fall to Split Nashville Series
August 24, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
Nashville broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning on Ray Olmedo's two-run homer as the Sounds held off Iowa the rest of the way for a 6-4 win Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park. With the victory, Nashville took the season series against the I-Cubs, 10-6, and split the current series 2-2.
Chris Carpenter made his Triple-A debut for Iowa after being promoted from double-A Tennessee. Carpenter worked through early trouble for Iowa as he gave up three runs over the first two frames.
Mat Gamel homered with one out in the top of the first, his second round-tripper in two days, to stake Nashville an early 2-0 lead.
The I-Cubs struck back in the home half of the first for three runs of their own. Sam Fuld and Marquez Smith hit back-to-back singles and an error on a Brad Snyder grounder by Sounds' first baseman Joe Koshansky allowed Fuld to score. Bryan LaHair walked to load the bases and was followed by Bobby Scales, who hit an RBI groundout to score Smith from third. Welington Castillo then singled to left field to score Snyder and give Iowa a 3-2 lead.
Iowa's lead was short lived as Nashville knotted the score in the top of the second. With two outs, Norris Hopper singled, stole second and eventually scored on a two-out RBI double from Adam Stern.
Cubs' reliever Hung-Wen Chen worked in long relief for Iowa, tossing four frames after Carpenter only lasted three innings. Carpenter allowed three runs on seven hits, needing 84 pitches to work through three innings. He walked four and struck out four.
Chen worked a scoreless fourth before giving up the eventual winning run in the fifth inning. He allowed a lead off single to Luis Cruz before Olmedo skied a ball into right field to put the Sounds up for good.
The Cubs had their chances down the stretch and were in good position to take the lead in the eighth. Snyder singled to lead off the inning and moved to third one out later on a double from Bobby Scales. With the tying and go-ahead run in scoring position, Iowa failed to get the runners home as Welington Castillo struck out and Jim Adduci lined out to end the inning.
Chen (2-3, 5.09) took the loss for Iowa, pitching four innings in relief. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits while striking out three.
Sounds' starter Josh Butler (4-1, 5.97) picked up the win, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits over five innings of work.
Iowa takes its first place squad on the road to second-place Omaha for five games before heading to Albuquerque for a five-game, four-day road series there. The Cubs currently hold a 2.5 lead in the American North division over both Omaha and Memphis.
