Peoria, Ill - Tyler Pike gave up a two-out single in the fourth inning to Peoria's Jacob Wilson, the only hit the left- hander allowed in six scoreless innings. Backed by the fine performance on the mound, Clinton cruised to a 5-2 win over the Chiefs Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park.
Despite drawing five walks against Pike, Peoria put a base-runner on second base just one time in the first six innings against him.
The LumberKings started the scoring in the third inning when Keith Werman led off the frame with a sharp single to center. Dario Pizzano followed with his team-high 12th double of the season. Both came around to score when Tim Lopes hit a chopper over the head of third baseman Carson Kelly.
The lead was extended to 3-0 in the sixth on Ketel Marte's RBI fielder's choice. Two more came around to score when Chiefs' right-fielder Nick Martini lost a fly ball hit by Patrick Kivlehan in the sun. It made it a 5-0 lead, more than enough for Pike and David Holman.
Holman worked the final three innings and notched his first save of the year. Peoria got a single tally in the eighth on a wild pitch and another run in the ninth after a fielding error by Marte.
The win puts the LumberKings two games above .500 for the first time in 2013. They will try for the series win in the finale Monday morning. Clinton sends left-hander Rusty Shellhorn (0-0, 1.69) to the mound against Peoria right- hander Joe Cuda (2-2, 5.93). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM CT.
