Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings lifted the Lansing Lugnuts (17-23) to a 7-3 win over the Great Lakes Loons (14-28) on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The Lugnuts have now won a season-high four games in a row and eight of their last 10.
Balbino Fuenmayor gave Lansing a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after he ripped a double to left field, scoring Gustavo Pierre and Christian Lopes.
After Great Lakes tied the game with a solo home run, Pierre and Carlos Ramirez, each hit two-run doubles to give Lansing a 6-2 lead in the fifth frame. An additional run scored on a passed ball to give Lansing all seven of their runs in two innings.
Loons starter Jharel Cotton (Loss, 1-3) pitched well but the Lugnuts got to him the second and third time through the order. In total, Cotton threw four innings, allowing six runs - all of them earned - on five hits. Cotton walked two and struck out five.
On the mound for Lansing, Javier Avendano (Win, 4-2) continued the recent stretch of strong starting pitching against Great Lakes, tossing five innings and allowing just a pair of runs. He allowed seven hits to the Loons, issuing one walk and striking out two.
Both Loons' runs came on solo home runs against Avendano. The first came off the bat of Jeremy Rathjen in the fourth, giving Great Lakes a 1-0 lead at the time. Tyler Ogle's homer in the fifth inning tied the game 2-2 before the Lugnuts opened things up in the home half.
Lansing will look to complete the four-game sweep on Monday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Lugnuts will send southpaw Alonzo Gonzalez (2-3, 6.11) to the mound opposing Great Lakes' right-hander Carlos Frias (4-1, 1.59).
