Dayton Dragons News Release

South Bend, Ind.-Beau Amaral collected three hits and scored two runs while Robert Stephenson struck out nine batters over seven strong innings to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 7-5 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks on Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Dragons a season-high four-game winning streak. They will try for a sweep of the five-game series on Monday morning at 10:35 a.m.

The Dragons scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed. Seth Mejias-Brean's run-scoring double brought in Amaral with the first run of the game. Jesse Winker drove in a run with an infield ground out, and Junior Arias' two-out single up the middle made it 3-0.

South Bend pulled to within two runs several times at 3-1, 4-2, and 5-3 but they could not get any closer. Dayton's Joe Terry drove in a run in the fourth with a base hit and Robert Ramirez delivered an RBI single in the fifth. Amaral and Winker each had run-scoring single in the eighth.

Stephenson (3-3) worked seven good innings, allowing four hits and three runs with one walk and nine strikeouts. He allowed a run in the first and then a pair of solo home runs to Roidany Aguila in the fourth and seventh innings. Austin Salter made his Dragons debut in relief of Stephenson, working one and two-thirds innings, allowing four hits and two runs with one walk and three strikeouts. Joey Housey came on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save, his first of the year, getting the final out on his second pitch of the outing.

The Dragons improved to 17-26 with the win while South Bend fell to 24-16.

The Dragons collected 11 hits. In addition to the three by Amaral, Terry and Arias each had two. Mejias-Brean had one hit to extend his hitting streak to nine straight games, the longest of the year by a Dayton player. The first seven hitters in the Dayton batting order each contributed one RBI.

The Dragons handed South Bend starting pitcher Daniel Watts (6-1), the Midwest League leader in victories, his first loss of the year. Watts worked five innings and allowed eight hits and five runs with two walks and two strikeouts.

The Dragons meet the Silver Hawks on Monday morning at 10:35 a.m. Ismael Guillon (1-4, 9.10) will start for Dayton against South Bend's Brandon Sinnery (0-2, 2.37). All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
