Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A Dalton Hicks RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Kernels an 8-7 win over Kane County on Sunday afternoon at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It was the team's third walk-off in four games.
The ninth inning began with a double to deep left by J.D. Williams. Byron Buxton put down a sacrifice bunt, moving Williams to third base. The Cougars then intentionally walked both Niko Goodrum and Jorge Polanco to load the bases. Hicks took three straight balls, followed by a strike, before driving in game-winning run.
The game went to the bottom of the ninth inning because of a two-out, two-run home run by David Bote in the top of the ninth. Bote's first homer of the year came off of Kernels reliever Alex Muren, tying the game 7-7.
Muren (2-0) still collected the win, going three innings and allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked none. Matthew Tomshaw started and went six innings, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking one.
The Kernels scored a single run in the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. With two outs Jorge Polanco reached on an error, went to second base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Hicks RBI single.
Kane County took a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Carlos Escobar doubled home Bijan Rademacher, Escobar scored on a RBI fielder's choice by Oliver Zapata, and then Zapata came home on Gioskar Amaya's RBI triple.
J.D. Williams homered to right field in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Cougars lead to 3-2.
The Kernels took a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning. Candido Pimentel doubled to begin the inning and later scored on a RBI fielder's choice by Buxton. Buxton soon scored on Polanco's RBI triple. Hicks followed with a RBI single to plate Polanco.
Rock Shoulders tied the game 5-5 in the sixth inning with a two-run home run. His tenth of the season was his second in two days and tied him with Adam Brett Walker for the league lead.
The Kernels plated single runs in the seventh and eighth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Polanco's RBI single in the seventh scored Buxton, who had reached via a walk. Travis Harrison homered to left in the eighth inning to put the Kernels up by a pair.
Ian Dickson (1-2) took the loss, going four innings in relief. He allowed six runs on seven hits. Jose Rosario went four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) in his first start of the season.
