Cedar Rapids, Iowa - In a game that featured four ties and three lead changes, it was the Cedar Rapids Kernels with the final blow in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off sacrifice fly from Dalton Hicks as the Kane County Cougars fell 8-7 on Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

With the Kane County Cougars (20-21) trailing by two with two-outs in the top of the ninth, David Bote smashed a two-run homer over the left field fence off righty Alex Muren to tie the game at seven. Muren (2-0) eventually earned the win working three innings out of the bullpen, striking out three and walking none.

In the bottom of the ninth Ian Dickson allowed a lead-off double to J.D. Williams, who was then replaced by Eddie Orozco. Byron Buxton bunted Williams to third with one out before Orozco intentionally walked the next two hitters. With the bases loaded, Dalton Hicks lashed a deep fly ball to left field that scored Williams easily giving the Cedar Rapids Kernels (29-13) their second walk-off win of the series.

Dickson (1-2) took the loss after four innings of work, allowing seven hits and five runs while striking out four. Jose Rosario started in his Cougars debut and worked four innings allowing two hits and one earned run.

The Cougars had tied the game at five in the sixth inning on a Rock Shoulders two-run homer against Kernels starter Matthew Tomshaw. Tomshaw worked six innings allowing five runs and striking out a career-high seven.

With three runs in the third inning, the Cougars took their only lead of the game. Tomshaw had retired the first six batters he faced to begin the game before Bijan Rademacher bunted his way on to start the third. Carlos Escobar drove him in with an RBI double. Escobar scored from third on a groundball by Oliver Zapata and Gioskar Amaya capped the scoring with an RBI triple.

The Cougars conclude a four-game set against the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday at 12:05 p.m. after losing two of the first three. Righty Tayler Scott (2-1) will start for the Cougars against lefty Brett Lee (3-2). The Cougars will return home on May 25th for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. against the Beloit Snappers.
