Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (51-61) used a pair of four-run innings to win their third straight over the Toledo Mud Hens (45-66), this one by a score of 9-3 on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field.
The IronPigs took a 4-0 lead with the four runs in the first as Aaron Altherr brought home a pair with a two-run triple, Brian Bogusevic came through with an RBI single and Cord Phelps drove home another run with a sac fly.
Another four spot in the fifth opened up an 8-0 advantage for Lehigh Valley. Altherr (2-3, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, 3 R) knocked home his third and fourth runs of the night with a two-run double and Kelly Dugan (2-3, 2 RBI) had a two-run single in the inning.
Altherr's triple, three runs scored and 4 RBIs tied a season-high in all three categories for an IronPigs player.
In his International League and Detroit organization debut, Mud Hens starter Luis Cessa (0-1) gave up the eight runs on nine hits to go along with two walks and three strikeouts over five innings of work.
In the home half of the fifth, Manny Pina led off with a single for Toledo, moved to second on a single and scored on Dixon Machado's RBI single to cut the lead to 8-1.
Pigs starter Sean O'Sullivan (1-1) allowed one run on five hits while walking four and fanning a pair in 5.0 IP.
RHP Jason Berken (4.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K) tossed the final four innings for manager Dave Brundage's squad to notch his first save of the year.
The Pigs tacked on a run in the seventh to make it 9-1 as Altherr drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a single, to third on a walk and scored on a wild pitch charged to Mud Hens RHP Jose Valdez (2.0 IP, 2 H, R, ER, 3 BB, 2 K).
A pair of runs in the bottom half of the seventh brought Toledo within 9-3 as Marc Krauss plated a run with an RBI single and Mike Hessman drove home a run via an RBI double.
Tyler Henson (2-5, 2B, 2 R) also had a multi-hit game for the IronPigs.
The series wraps up on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. from Fifth Third Field as LHP Anthony Vasquez (7-3, 4.17) takes the hill for the IronPigs against fellow southpaw Kyle Ryan (0-9, 5.26).
