(Syracuse, NY) The Syracuse Chiefs loaded the bases four times in a span of five innings and got enough offense to withstand a late PawSox rally in a 7-4 win on Wednesday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The PawSox, who scored the game's first run, got within three with a three-run rally in the eighth but were swept away in the three-game series. With the victory, the Chiefs supplanted Pawtucket in fifth place in the IL North and moved the PawSox into last place.

Early in the game, it looked like the PawSox might salvage the finale.  After Matt Barnes - who made his first start since May 1st - worked around a walk in the first and retired the Chiefs in order in the second, Pawtucket broke through in the third.  Jeff Bianchi led off the inning with a walk and stole second. With two outs, Sandy Leon singled to center to give Pawtucket a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, the Chiefs put a man at every base for the first of four times. With one out, Trea Turner's sacrifice fly tied the game at one, and the Chiefs pulled ahead on Jason Martinson's single to right. Barnes then struck out Matt den Dekker to limit the damage and keep it a 2-1 game.

With a runner at every base and one out in the fourth, Emmanuel Burriss greeted Pat Light - who relieved Barnes after 3.1 innings - with a first-pitch, two-run single that made it 4-1. Light then fanned Turner and Martinson to end the inning.

Light retired the Chiefs in order in the fifth and found himself in a bases-loaded jam in the sixth after a walk, an error and a single. But the righthander fanned three consecutive Syracuse hitters - using eleven consecutive split-finger pitches and a final fastball than fanned Martinson. Light struck out six over 2.2 innings.

Syracuse loaded the bags again in the seventh and got three more runs in to push their lead to 7-1, but the PawSox rallied in the eighth. Matt Grace yielded a leadoff double to Jeff Bianchi then walked Marco Hernandez and Jemile Weeks. Leon again singled to plate a run, and Allen Craig rolled an infield single to score a second run and make it 7-3. Garin Cecchini then bounced into a force out to score Weeks, pull the Sox within three and put PawSox at the corners. But Deven Marrero struck out and Humberto Quintero lined out to right to end the rally.

In his Pawtucket debut, Ryan Cook got the last out of the seventh inning and sent Syracuse down in order in the eighth.

The Chiefs notched their second series sweep of the PawSox at NBT Bank Stadium and took eight of the nine games with the PawSox in their ballpark.

The PawSox will return to McCoy Stadium on Thursday, August 6th and welcome the Chiefs for the first of a four-game series. Pawtucket sends William Cuevas in his AAA debut against Paolo Espino (3-5, 3.42). Good seats for all games in the series are available; call 401-724-7300 or visit the PawSox online at www.pawsox.com to get them now.
