Charlotte Knights News Release

(Allenton, PA) - The Lehigh Valley IronPigs scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning on two home runs and went on to beat the Charlotte Knights by a score of 4-1 in the opening game of their four-game series from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA on Tuesday.

Charlotte starter Terry Doyle (1-2, 4.13) allowed both home runs in the inning and was charged with the loss. Doyle, 26, struck-out six batters and walked just one, but it was the long ball in the second inning which put the 'Pigs on top.

After the Knights scored in the top of the second courtesy of a Dan Johnson solo home run, Lehigh Valley battled back in the bottom of the frame.

With two outs in the inning, Doyle allowed a single to third baseman Mike Fontenot and then catcher Erik Kratz followed with a two-run home run to make it a 2-1 Lehigh Valley lead.

Two batters later, with second baseman Kevin Frandsen on first after a single through the middle, shortstop Andres Blanco hit a two-run home run of his own and it was now a 4-1 'Pigs lead.

While Doyle settled in after the inning, the damage was already done. Former Knights reliever Scott Elarton (2-1, 3.51) started for the IronPigs and allowed just one run on three hits over six innings to record the win. The 36-year-old went 1-2 with an 8.24 ERA for the Knights in 2010.

Johnson's home run was his fifth of the season. Jordan Danks had two of the club's three hits on the evening. Josh Phegley, who entered play with a 13-game hit-streak, went 0-3 on the evening.

Lehigh Valley (14-11) handed the ball to reliever Jake Diekman in the ninth inning and he struck-out the side to notch his fourth save of the season.

The two teams will be back on the diamond on Wednesday for game two of the four-game series. First pitch is set for 10:35 AM from Coca-Cola Park.
