Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (13-10) came from behind for the ninth time this season in 13 wins and matched its longest winning streak of the season grabbing its fourth consecutive win with a 5-2 victory over the Rochester Red Wings (9-15) who have lost a season high seven straight games. Steve Pearce broke open a 2-1 game in the eighth with a three run homer for the Yankees who have won nine of their last 11.
After five scoreless innings in which both teams had opportunities to get on the board, the Red Wings plated the games first run on a double to center field from Ben Revere. The low rising line drive got up and over the head of Yankees centerfielder Dewayne Wise and scored Rene Rivera all the way from first base. Rivera picked up a one out single off Warren sneaking a one hopper past second baseman Ramiro Pena.
Red Wings starter Daryl Thompson handcuffed the Yankees all night allowing only a fourth inning single to Jayson Nix through the first six innings of the game. SWB remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning putting up a single run off Thompson to tie the game at 1-1. Pearce led off the inning with a gap double to right center field and moved to third on Jack Cust's single to center. With no out and runners on the corners, the Red Wings went to the bullpen bringing in Casey Fien (LP, 0-3) to face Francisco Cervelli. Rochester played the corners in and the middle back for a double play, Cervelli bounced into the 6-4-3 DP but the tying run scored from third and the teams went to the eighth inning knotted at 1-1.
In the bottom of the eighth inning the Yankees blew the game open, although the rally began slowly. Fien started the inning by striking out Pena, who saw his seven game hit streak end with a 0-3 night. Doug Bernier worked a one out walk and the night for Fien was done. Lefty Tyler Robertson replaced Fien and struck out Colin Curtis for the second out of the inning. A walk to Jayson Nix extended the inning and moved Bernier to scoring position for Dewayne Wise. Wise chopped an infield single over the head of Robertson. Joe Thurston knocked the ball initially before kicking it out into shallow center which allowed Bernier, who reached third on the initial play before the error to score giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Pearce put the game away with his third homer of the season and his second against Rochester with a line drive three run shot into the SWB bullpen in left giving Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 5-1 lead.
The bullpen kept the Yankees in the game after Warren left following his 5.0 innings of one run baseball. Chase Whitely turned in 2.0 scoreless innings and Juan Cedeno (WP, 1-0) worked a scoreless eighth inning and picked up the win after the four run eighth inning.
The Red Wings added a single run off Kevin Whelan in a non save situation in the ninth inning on two hits and two walks to close out the scoring at 5-2.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continues its stretch of 18 consecutive games as the up the "home" team, with game two of a four game series with the Rochester Red Wings on Wednesday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Left hander Manny Banuelos (0-1, 10.13) is expected to get the start for the Yankees while the Red Wings will send right hander Cole DeVries (0-1, 2.91) to the mound.
