Pigs, PawSox Split Doubleheader

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (54-68) and the Pawtucket Red Sox (46-76) split a day-night doubleheader on Saturday at Coca-Cola Park. Pawtucket captured game one by a score of 5-2, while the Pigs snapped a five-game skid with a 6-5 win in the nightcap.

The two teams wrap up their series on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown as RHP David Buchanan (3-0, 3.16) gets the ball for the IronPigs against Pawtucket RHP William Cuevas (0-2, 3.00).

Game One

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs dropped a 5-2 decision to the Pawtucket Red Sox in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park.

Quintin Berry's solo shot in the top of the second off of Pigs starter Jerad Eickhoff gave the PawSox a 1-0 lead. It was the fourth home run of the season for Berry.

Pawtucket extended the lead to 2-0 in the fifth as Jemile Weeks drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on Matt Spring's RBI double.

The Pigs had two on with one out in the sixth when Red Sox starter Rich Hill departed, but RHP Jonathan Aro was able to get Tyler Henson to fly out and Chase d'Arnaud to pop out to end the inning.

Hill (3-2) gave up four hits while walking three and fanning two over 6.1 shutout IP in his first appearance with Pawtucket this season.

A three-run eighth extended the PawSox lead to 5-0 as Allen Craig knocked home a pair with a two-run single and Carlos Rivero came through with an RBI ground-rule double.

Eickhoff (2-1) had departed with two on and two out in the eighth trailing 3-0, but was tagged with the final two runs when RHP Colton Murray (1.1 IP, H, 3 K) surrendered the two-run single to Craig.

The right-hander gave up the five runs on six hits to go along with a walk and eight strikeouts over 7.2 IP.

Jordan Danks' two-run shot off of Aro (2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER) in the bottom of the ninth brought the Pigs within 5-2.

Russ Canzler (2-4) and Kelly Dugan (2-3, R) each had a multi-hit game for the IronPigs.

Game Two

Holding a 6-5 lead with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, Pigs RHP Dustin McGowan (1.0 IP, 2 H, R, ER, 2 BB, K) was able to fan Carlos Rivero and snap a five-game skid for the IronPigs with a 6-5 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Saturday night at Coca-Cola Park.

McGowan notched his ninth save of the season.

A four-run ninth allowed Pawtucket to cut the lead to 6-5 as Marco Hernandez plated a pair with a two-run triple, Chris Marrero came through with an RBI single to shallow center and Jonathan Roof drove home Hernandez with a sac fly.

All three runs were charged to IronPigs RHP Jason Berken (3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 4 K).

Pigs starter Severino Gonzalez (2-5) gave up the one run on four hits while fanning three over his five innings of work.

The PawSox grabbed a 1-0 lead with a run in the first as Quintin Berry reached via a one-out single, stole second and scored on Allen Craig's RBI double.

Brian Bogusevic's (1-3, HR, 2 RBI, SB, 2 R) two-run blast off of Pawtucket starter Mike McCarthy in the home half of the same frame gave the Pigs a 2-1 lead. It was Bogusevic's 10th home run of the season.

In the bottom of the second, Jordan Danks (2-4, 2B, R) poked a one-out double to right and later scored on Tyler Henson's RBI double to extend the Lehigh Valley lead to 3-1.

A three-run third opened up a 6-1 lead for the IronPigs as Tommy Joseph hit a two-run shot and Kelly Dugan delivered a sac fly. The home run was Joseph's first of the season and his first at the Triple-A level since April 26, 2013.

McCarthy (0-1) allowed the six runs on eight hits to go along with three walks and a pair of strikeouts in 6.0 IP.

Aaron Altherr (2-4, 2B, R) also had a multi-hit night for Lehigh Valley.
