Pigs Drop Opener in Indy
August 7, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Indians jumped out an 8-0 lead and hung on to defeat Lehigh Valley 12-5. Joey Meneses homered for his IL leading 22nd time and is now batting .316 with 71 RBIs.
Kevin Newman went 5-5 and hit for the cycle for the Indians. Scoring a pair of runs and driving in three, Newman finished with a single, two doubles, a triple and a home run.
Cole Irvin (10-4) was tagged for six runs, five earned over five-innings. He scattered nine hits and struck out four in the outing. The IronPigs used three relievers in the game with Tyler Gilbert, Edubray Ramos and Jake Thompson all providing an inning of relief.
The big inning for the Indians came in the bottom of the sixth. Already leading 2-0, Indianapolis plated six runs in the frame to take the 8-0 lead. Irvin was lifted with no outs and the bases loaded and the Indians rattled off four straight hits to clear the bases.
The Pigs chipped away in the top of the seventh against Tyler Eppler (12-5). Meneses blasted his 22nd home run of the year for the Pigs first runs. A two-run, pinch-hit single by Danny Ortiz made it 8-3 put Lehigh Valley back in the ball game.
The IronPigs plated two more runs in the inning on RBIs by Jesmuel Valentin and Mitch Walding to make it 8-5. Five of the Pigs nine hits in the game came in the top of the seventh.
Indianapolis bounced back in the bottom of the seventh and eighth against the Pigs. Adding insurance in the seventh and pair of homers in the eighth put the game away and put Indianapolis up 12-5.
The Pigs and Indians have a quick turn around tomorrow afternoon. Drew Anderson takes the hill against Nick Kingham.
