Toledo Mud Hens News Release

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Toledo Mud Hens opened a crucial six-game road trip on a winning note, defeating the Rochester Red Wings by a 5-1 count on Tuesday at Frontier Field.

Matt Hall enjoyed his finest start in a Mud Hens (59-54) uniform to date, scattering three hits in seven shutout innings of work, striking out nine against zero walks. Josh Smoker added one scoreless inning out of the Hen Pen, striking out three of the four batters he faced to wrap up the contest.

At the plate, Mikie Mahtook and Jarrod Saltalamacchia accounted for six of Toledo's seven hits in the series opener. Mahtook finished a home run shy of the cycle, going 4-for-4 with a triple, a double, two RBI, and a run scored, while Saltalamacchia finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI single.

The Mud Hens started the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second stanza. Jason Krizan drew a walk to lead off the frame, and scored all the way from first when Mahtook grounded a double down the left-field line to stake the visitors to a 1-0 lead. After Mahtook advanced to third on an Edwin Espinal groundout, Saltalamacchia brought him in with a base hit to center that doubled Toledo's advantage.

Still ahead 2-0 entering the top of the fifth inning, the Mud Hens capitalized on a couple of Rochester fielding errors to tack on two more runs. With runners on first and second and one out, Dawel Lugo hit a grounder that was misplayed by shortstop Nick Gordon, allowing Machado to come home and give Toledo a three-run cushion. Third baseman Willians Astudillo then picked up the ball and made an ill-advised throw toward first base to permit Stewart to score uncontested and give the Mud Hens a commanding 4-0 lead.

A fifth run arrived two batters later, as Mahtook sent a sharp single into left to bring in Lugo. That proved to be the end of the night for Rochester (50-62) starter Zack Littell, who was replaced on the mound by Luke Bard.

The Red Wings spoiled Toledo's shutout bid in the last of the eighth. Edgar Corcino whacked a leadoff triple into the gap in right-center, and scored when Juan Graterol hit a check-swing single into shallow right to cut the deficit to 5-1, which held up as the final tally.
